Prepare for winter driving by keeping essentials handy: part two

Earlier this week we discussed some essentials that all drivers should keep in their cars to ensure they are adequately prepared, whether during a holiday road trip or any routine drive. We talked about the importance of insurance documents, doctor records and a few devices that can help your trip go smoothly.

While you may be able to stop and get what you need during a trip, it is best to be prepared so you’ll feel safe and comfortable if you run into unexpected obstacles like a dead battery or an accident. Some other essentials to carry include:

Environmental protection guards against seasonal elements like cold or heat. Carry a blanket or portable handwarmers in your car in case you’re traveling in the cold and need to stay toasty.

A first aid kit should include bandages, disinfectant and over-the-counter medications to help you deal with any minor injuries. Also carry extra prescription drugs if you may get caught somewhere overnight.

Road flares are important if you get stuck at night or in a rural area where lighting is scarce. Other drivers may crash into a car at the side of the road if they don’t have proper visibility.

Jumper cables will allow you to get a jump if your battery dies, a common cause of road problems. Similarly, you can spread holiday cheer and goodwill if another driver is stuck with a dead battery and you can give them a boost.

A roll of quarters will ensure that you are prepared for any toll roads you encounter on your trip. Running a toll is a traffic violation and you want to avoid any run-ins with law enforcement.

If you find yourself or a loved one injured in a motor vehicle accident caused by someone else’s negligence or dangerous road conditions, consider speaking with an experienced personal injury attorney. They can help you review the facts of your case, pursue any appropriate claims for damages and get your life back on track.
